We are a group of first generation Chinese immigrants in the United States. We built this real time coronavirus/covid-19 tracker for US and Canada to bring more transparency to the public and increase awareness about the global epidemic.

Our Worklog on Medium: Under the Hood of the first real-time, media-based tracker of COVID-19 in North America

FAQ

  • What's in a name: CoronaVirus / COVID-19?

It's not China virus / Wuhan Virus / Kung Flu, Please check www.npr.org
  • How are you able to update day and night?

One of our team members is currently in China. The time difference works in our favor!
  • Where does your data come from?

We have a mix of scripts, API calls, and user submissions. Our data team then jumps in and fact check, cross referencing difference sources, de-dup and make sure we present the most accurate data from credible sources.  Data from states are sometimes not up-to-date and we use data provided by counties whenever there's a discrepancy. We use data from CovidTracking, and JHU (Rest of the world).
  • Is this site copyrighted?

This website and its contents herein, including all data, mapping, and analysis, copyright 2020 1Point3Acres, LLC, all rights reserved, is provided to the public strictly for general information purposes only.
  • Can take this a screenshot?

Screen shots of the website are permissible so long as you provide appropriate credit.
  • Why does data here differ from data on other websites?

Data are being collected in real-time and are preliminary and subject to change as COVID-19 response continues. The website relies upon publicly available data from multiple sources that do not always agree. Difference sources update at difference frequency; sites with less frequent updates often result in lower case numbers than may be available from us.
  • Why your numbers are frequently thousands of cases higher than the other sources?

We have a highly dedicated team who strive to update data in almost real-time. Many sites just scrape our data illegally without permission or copy from public data set published by JHU COVID-19 World Map. JHU World Map is widely recognized and used by many, including US government, but JHU uses our data. That's why JHU also falls behind us when updating numbers. Any tracker/website that uses JHU data is of course even slower.
Professor Lauren Gardner, creator of JHU COVID-19 World Map, mentioned in a Science magazine interview: There is a media aggregation site for the United States called 1point3Acres that we follow really closely. We take U.S. data from them, and they pull global data from us.https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/04/every-day-new-surprise-inside-effort-produce-world-s-most-popular-coronavirus-tracker
  • Does the website provide medical guidance?

Reliance on the website for medical guidance or use of the website in commerce is strictly prohibited.
  • Why don't you put the recovered number for each state/county?

Right now we don't have credible sources for recovered people. If you do, pleaselet us know. We don't know where Bing/Google get their data. We double checked with JHU.
  • How can I help?

Please use this link to send us new information about the pandemic. If you are giving us tips on a state / county, it'd be super helpful if you could help us break down the number of confirmed, deaths and recovered cases in the item that you submit. This would help us a lot in tracking down an accurate number.
Please note there is not a universally agreed upon method to report these numbers and we are using a set of systems that we are sticking with. And that may not agree with what you had in mind. When we chose to NOT directly copy the numbers you report, it's most likely due to this. We will do our best in describing our method in the notes for each state. We still appreciate your contribution, as well as your patience and kindness when providing these tips.
  • Who are the engineers?

All five of us were born in China, four pursued graduate studies in the US. Two are on H1b work visa, two are permanent residents, one currently in China.
  • Who are the data team?

See their information below. Most are students, postdocs, scientists, and professionals who study/work in the US. Most if not all of them were born in China, and came to the US on a student visa.
  • Why don't your numbers agree with some other sites?

Given this is a rapidly developing situation, there are bound to be small discrepancies between various reporting methods. There won't be one perfect answer. We included sources and snippets for every entry that we put up, so users can draw their own conclusions.
  • How does the process work behind the scene? Do you use AI?

We don't use any machine learning (ML) techniques such as NLP at this point. We have bulit an efficient workflow to stream information from media and user generated leads, to facilitate our data team, who then cross references multiple sources to arrive at trustworthy results. As far as we can tell, this process is hard to automate with AI. We believe building for operational efficiency outperforms an AI/ML system at our current scale.
  • How often do you update?

Other than the slow hours 1am - 4am PST, we update every 5-15min, whenever data comes in, and after we are able to check the sources.
  • Who sponsored you?

We don't have sponsors. We are donating our time, effort and expertise for the health of the general public of our adopted hometown.
  • If I cite numbers from this site, how should I credit the source?

We ask that you cite us as "1Point3Acres.com" with an HTML link to this site. The link must be clickable and without "nofollow" tag. For non-electronic publications, please include the site url in full. Please direct data requests to this form - no redistribution of our data please (we worked really hard to curate it).
  • Can we get a copy of your data?

We offer data APIs so you can access the data automatically, Please check this page.
  • How can you keep up with the increasing number of cases?

Our teams work hard to keep up the effort. Please consider joining our team of volunteers!
  • What's your favorite quote?

"Be the change you want to see. " OK no one actually asked this but we like it anyway.
